Bah humbug

Dear Neighbours,

I'm a big fan of the enthusiasm thing. I like happy neighbourhoods, and I like living in an established one (however sketchy some neighbours were and however happy I am that they moved!). It's so much better than the student ghettos / retirement apartments I've lived in. Even if some of you didn't bother so much with the hallowe'en thing (this year OR last).

That being said, I noticed on my run tonight that no fewer than 13 of you in a 4k radius of our house have their Christmas lights up. Not just up, they're on.

I understand the desire to put up the lights BEFORE the snow really flies and avoiding the risk of having exposing flesh to the risk of being flash frozen to any surface it comes in contact with when take your glove off for just a second. I see the value in putting up lights before interminably cold weather hits, and by not doing it now myself, I understand I will likely be cursing the fact that we didn't put our lights up when it was warm in a few weeks.

I have to say, though, I'm not a fan of the early-mid November Christmas decorating. Your lawn shouldn't be blinking yet. It shouldn't be as bright as daytime when I run by your place at night. Giant Santas and enough spotlights to illuminate a black hole have no place in November.

I get that the holidays are exciting, bringing with them constant visiting, going place to place to place, frantic shopping, wrapping, commercialization to the hilt - and for some - religious significance (all but the latter are a rant for another day), and that you want to show off your excitement, but it's too early!

Sincerely,
Scroogey McCrankypants.

Our neighbors put theirs up last weekend. Usually by November...I'm okay with it.

Agreed! I'm a purist and I cannot get into the Christmas spirit until after Thanksgiving. Although you've already had yours, it just doesn't feel like the holidays to me until the end of November.

Haha, I never took mine down from last year. :)

I find it makes a good beacon for first time visitors to the house!

One of our radio stations started playing Christmas music on November 1st. By the time Christmas rolls around, we'll all be so sick of it that we'll be bah humbugging it.

I will be putting up our Christmas tree early (for me, that is)...right after our Thanksgiving. We're leaving for Parris Island, SC on 12/12 to pick up Mike and I figured it would be one less thing to do when I get back. Now, if I can keep the dogs and the cats OUT of the tree while we're gone. Electrical fence around it anyone?

I'm with you. I'm thinking of starting a movement against the early onset of Christmas. I'm tired of going shopping for Halloween costumes in early October only to find they've been moved to the clearance aisle to make way for wrapping paper and wreaths.

Wrong I say!

Here Here! We were taking about that tonight. We had people putting them up and on November 1!We were thinking there should be some sort of law! It's totally crazy, and what's with the christmas commercials so early -- and Santa is in the mall!

The more you people think about SANTA, the more presents you will buy me! Bring on the YULE LOG and the toddler gifts, folks!!

Signed,
My daughter

I am so with you on this one Heather. Course I grew up with a father who put the lights up in September so he'd be the first on the street. Ya ... that's a title to brag about.

I noticed that one guy in our complex is starting to put stuff up ... he has the boughs up. I imagine the lights will be next. A friend of mine is putting her tree up this weekend. A neighbour has their tree up.

Gord and I are bah humbug kinda people. I'll put lights up on our terrace a couple weeks before Christmas ... that's it.

Wordgirl: I say wait until December, but there were cute wreaths at the store the other day and I almost gave in!

TB: me too, though my deadline is early December, I totally agree.

Henly: It totally would be a good beacon!

luck o' the irish: I'm sure it's only a matter of time

elainemi: I used to HATE that station! I trust our dogs with NOTHING breakable.

Sweatpantsmom: Agreed!

kirsty: I'm all about legislating it. :)

chebbles' mama: Ew! yule log! Kid there's more to life! :P

sunshine scribe: heh the rule in our house was December 1, though we put them up earlier so we didn't freeze.

teena: See I love boughs, just not too early. We always put lights up, and I'm so looking forward to having a Christmas tree, but not too soon!
