And now for the mushy part

So here goes, finally a gushy post.

My sister is right now in surgery that's completely elective. She chose to have it done. She's donating her bone marrow to someone who really needs it. We of course don't know the details because they're kept strictly confidential, but she's donating her bone marrow to someone else in this world who may need it to live.

Bone marrow donations aren't exactly major surgery, but they're certainly not a cakewalk either. It will take her probably at least a week to recover, and I have no doubt it'll probably hurt. But, she's doing it because someone on the bone marrow registry was a match for her, and after a few appointments and a few vials of blood things were all scheduled for surgery. She's taking a couple of her vacation days (which are few and far between) to recover. All this so that someone might get a second shot at life.

Man am I proud of my kid sister. Love ya, even if I sometimes call you Elaine the pain the booger brain. For the record you're very thoughtful and caring and smart. I'm so glad we're sisters and friends. Will send chocolate to speed your recovery.

What a wonderful thing to do! I hope your sister makes a speedy recovery.

I'm about to donate eggs to my cousin in the hope that she will be able to have a baby... if feels so good to be able to do SOMETHING to help...

Awwww, that's so wonderful! Your sister is cool. Reminds me that maybe it's time to have another crack at donating blood. Just because I passed out last time and then ate all their cookies doesn't mean I don't have something to offer.

In the past I believe people with Gaucher Disease (the disease I have) would get bone marrow transplants when they were very sick. So I am especially appreciative toward anyone who is altruistic enough to undergo this procedure. Tell her thank you from me. :-)

em: I do too. I can only imagine how much your cousin will appreciate your help.

roro: Yeah, she's definitely cool. And hey, they have those pirate cookies (peanut butter) that are so wicked. Plus, if you find a permanent clinic the chairs are primo comfortable. I mostly go for the cookies and recliners myself.

daysgoby: she is!

nancy: I'll pass on your thanks.

That's awesome, amazing, inspiring. It touches me, really, because my mom was a transplant recipient and I am so grateful, because if she hadn't had the transplant I would have lost four years with her.

An update for everyone. My arse hurts, I'm pale, and tylenol 3's are my new best friends. That being said, I'd do it all over again, and would encourage everyone to sign up with their local registry (or even donate blood - that saves 3-4 lives!)

What a truly selfless act. Not many people can say they have done something so altruistic.
Here's to a quick recovery for your sister and the hope that her kindness can help someone in need.

Ditto to everything you said. It's not exactly the most painless thing in the world to donate bone marrow. I can't say that I'd have the same kind of guts. I'll raise a glass of wine to your sister tonight.
